Inshore and Offshore Fishing
Inshore
Costa Rica is world famous for its excellent inshore fishing. It is also the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful views of it’s coasts. It’s the perfect choice for people who may not have fished before. Some of the fish you may catch are: grouper, snapper, mackerel, horse mackerel, sea bass, tuna and the unpredictable roosterfish.
What does it mean? Inshore fishing is understood as fishing that is carried out close to the coast and is associated with fish such as snapper, rooster and mackerel.
In our area
Inshore in our area means that the boat will go to fishing spots that are 10-20 miles from your hotel, sometimes you will see the coast and sometimes you will not. Therefore, the boat will sail around 30 minutes to reach the fishing point, as most of our half days are 5 hours, this implies 4 hours of fishing and one hour of transfers.
What do you catch?
Normally dorado, rooster, small tuna, horse mackerel, bonitas, wahoo, and sometimes sailfish, we have the great advantage that for several months good-sized fish are very close.
Bottom fishing
Many prefer the inshore to do bottom fishing, in this case you would catch snapper, groupers, etc.
Offshore
There is no better place to do deep sea fishing than Costa Rica. Anglers from all over the globe flock to Costa Rica for its big game in fishing.

The Green Prince Of SportFishing
The coastal fishing 20 years ago wasn´t sought by the professional fishermen. A very common practice when they return form the deep sea fishing, where the kings were Marlin and Sailfish, was to do a small test by trolling from 20 to 30 minutes to fish a very colorful green fish that in spanish is named “Gallo”. This due to the good fight this fish gives, we could even say that it has very similar techniques with Marlin. It also has a strong resistance, a battle with it can last even 40 minutes.
In some point it became a target. Now it has its own space, the Roosterfish fishing is the favorite of many and of course it's colorful appearance gives a photo trophy for life. This fish has came to such a level of fame that it has became a protected specie, thats why it is catched only with the famous “catch and release” method. Nowadays there´s professional fishermen that come to Costa Rica exclusively to get there Roosterfish. Rooster fish:
One of the most sought predators in the sea is the Rooster fish, this due to its amazing fighting abilities.
Getting one is a huge challenge, even for the more experienced fisher mans.
As you may guess, it receives its name for the similarities with the crest of the roosters. Also they usually have a good size (they measure in average 1.5m).
This is a “catch and release” fish, as it is a commonly sought fish in the sport fishing world and also because its not really good for eating.

So why fishing rooster fish in Costa Rica? This species can be found on shallow coasts and the warm waters of Costa Rica are ideal for this.

Sailfish:
Sailfish is one of the most wanted trophies by fisherman during offshore fishing. Costa Rica is known for its numerous amount of this kind of fish a nd also because they produce one of the largest specimens all over the world. That answers why fishing sailfish in Costa Rica.

Some characteristics of this fish is that they weight on average 100lbs and they can go up to 60mph.
Also they have amazing figh ting abilities. You may find Sailfish in all over the year, though the best season for this fish goes from April to september. They feed on small fish, sardines, ballyhoo, and squid and of course, this is a catch and release only fish.

Blue Marlin:
Blue Marlin is the name of our store and also the name of one of the most desired target species of sporting anglers world wide. They are sought because of their great speed, big size and amazing aerial acrobatics they perform.
Blue Marlin can be found at any time of the year but it has its best season from december to april. They can weight up to 1400lbs and swim up to 60 mph.

Wahoo:
Another famous fish is the wahoo, mainly because of its size and capacity of accelerate really quick.
Also their great power make them a really exciting and fun fish to catch.
Their body is long and thin and its meat is supposed to have a great flavor while eating.

Dorado:
The fish of the thousand names...mahi mahi, dolphinfish or dorado are just some of the names to refer to one of the most important fish you can get while doing s portfishing in Costa Rica.
Its know for its brilliant yellow/green coloring and a small dorsal sail. Also because they provide an amazing strong fight while fishing. And mainly because you will find them in every good restaurant, as they are very tasty. So come on and grab your dinner! A lot of dorados are waiting for you.

Snapper:
The snapper is really sought for the experienced fisherman due for its amazing flavor. In Costa Rica there are of many variations but the most common one is the red snapper.

Grouper:

Normally we received diverse questions from our clients for example when is the best season to fishing in Costa Rica? and Which are the roosterfish season in Costa Rica?
We want you to know that The Papagayo Gulf has sport fishing of Rooster Fish and Mahi Mahi all the year. Due to climate change the water stays fresh all 12 monthns having better and longer fishing seasons, from May to August.
The deep sea fishing has its season, principally you´ll see Blue Marlin, Black Marlin and Lined Marlin also some Sailfish. In August, September and November we have yellow tuna and Wahoo. On the other hand fishing in Costa Rica in December, February and January it's a different game, the water is cooler and the Marlin comes closer to shore nevertheless, it's also the windy season.
